  First in New Mexico !

Ruidoso Downs Ad If you were asked where the first million dollar race was run in the world Ruidoso Downs probably wouldn't come to mind. In 1978 the All American Futurity Ruidoso's signature Labor Day Gala was run for that amount.

Famous trainers D. Wayne Lukus and Bob Baffert both raced Quarter Horses here before going on to thoroughbreds. Even with the Billy the Kid Casino on the campus Ruidoso only registers a Purse Value Index of 13 the lowest in the Racino rich state of New Mexico.

In 2011 the Purse Value Index went up to 14 as Ruidoso raced it's traditional Memorial Day to Labor Day schedule. This years running of the $2,400,000 All American Futurity was won by Ochoa, ridden by Roy Baldilez. Top riding honors went to Jacky Martin who tragically was injured in a spill just days before the meet ended. Martin ended up a quadriplegic from the injuries he sustained.
