Suzanne Kelly, started her riding career at Suffolk Downs, in 1979. The daughter of longtime New England trainer JJ Kelly, accepted her first mount on January 13, 1979. Her first win came on April 20, 1979 when she guided Viamo, into the winners circle.
Kelly spent most of her career on the New England circuit riding exclusively at Suffolk Downs and Rockingham Park. In 1980 her second year of riding she was the leading rider for the Suffolk Downs fall meet. She rode till 1988, then after a short retirement, she returned to the saddle in 1992. Her return lasted only a few months and she hung up her tack on May 24, 1992
Over her career she would place in multiple stakes races, winning more than 200 races. It seems that by the time Kelly started riding, the girls no longer had to ride in jockette and pony shows.
