BIOGRAPHY |
On September 13, 1980 at the age of 17, Mary Amodie, made the twenty or so mile trip from her home near Pittsfield, to Great Barrington Massachusetts. That afternoon she would ride her first professional race on a horse named Jim Wallace, trained by her mother Carolyn. The trio would try again the next week, again with no success, but Mary Amodie's career was underway.
I'm kinda guessing here, in 1981 she doesn't appear until July, at Commodore Downs, suggesting she might still have been in high school. She had a few mounts at Commodore, earning her first victory on July 31, aboard Deanit Peanit. Soon after, she returned to Massachusetts, for the fair circuit. Amodie would return to Commodore Downs in 1982, by the end of the year she would find herself in Tampa.
She would become a regular at Tampa Bay Downs for the rest of her career. Back then there was a circuit between Tampa Bay Downs and Rockingham Park. Many riders would start and end the year at Tampa returning to New England in late spring till fall. Mary would continue this pattern till the end of 1988. Her final year of racing ended on April 21, 1989 only her fourth start of that year.
