BIOGRAPHY |
Tuesdee Testa succeeded where Penny Ann Early and Sandy Schleiffers failed. She would become the first woman to ride at Santa Anita Park, on February 27, 1969 she rode Gallarush, for trainer Everett King. Less than a week later Testa won with her second mount Buz on Home. Testa went where King went, because her husband Al was his stable foreman, they left California and headed to New York.
Testa rode mostly in New York, the rest of the year, unless she was involved in one of those girl and pony shows, that many tracks promoted. She did benefit from one of those competitions.
At Suffolk Downs she placed in an all girl race, The Lady Godiva, doing so she earned a spot with three other girls to race against four male jockeys in The Guys and Dolls. First prize was a new Cadillac, which was won by Tony DeSpirito, Testa finished second earning herself a brand spanking new Ford Maverick (betcha that baby's still around). She was also the first female to win a race in New Jersey, with a win at Garden State Park. As the story goes Mrs. Testa was not comfortable in the spotlight, so her first year, as a jockey would be her last.
Testa was the excercise rider for the ill fated champion filly Dark Mirage, who would win the NYRA filly triple crown, now known as the Triple Tiara.
