BIOGRAPHY |
Barbara Suitor, was born in Alberta, Canada, one of the class of 1969. Baring a few gaps, her career spanned twenty two years. It started in Lethbridge, Alberta at a place called Whoop-Up Downs (one of my alltime favorite names) it exists today as just Lethbridge. Far from the attention the American woman were getting, she rode her first race on September 19, 1969. Three days later she would score her first victory. She would continue to ride at various tracks in Canada before making her way to the states in 1975.
In October of 1975, Suitor showed up at Finger Lakes Race Track, in upstate New York, it looks like she never raced in Canada again. In 1976, she would be a regular rider at Green Mountain Park in Vermont. That was it's last year of thoroughbred racing, so in 1977 she moved on to Pocono Downs, in Pennsylvania. After a year on that circuit, she returned to New England, riding at Narragansett Park, this would also be it's last year in existence. For some reason she only race there till May, not completing the season. After that the trail goes cold.
In 1981 Suitor, resurfaces for one race at Finger Lakes, after that she went to Waterford Park in West Virginia, where she stayed for two years. In 1984 she's back in New England mostly riding at the fairs. 1985 another change, this time she ends in Grove City, Ohio home of Darby Downs, more commonly known as Beulah Park. She rides here for a season before heading back to New England, where she became a fixture on the Mass Fair Circuit. Her final move came in 1990, when she returned to Waterford Park, now known as Mountaineer Park. Here she would run her final race on November 2, 1991. Barbara Suitor was one well traveled woman, who looks like she took her career seriously.
