Penny Ann Early tried her hardest to get into the starting gate ahead of Barbara Jo Rubin, but it was not to be. At the end of 1968, she faced a series of challenges, which finally ended in a jockey boycott, which kept her from the prize. Her career was short, only lasting one year and she only had one win, that came in The Lady Godiva an all female event at Suffolk Downs.
Penny Ann, did manage one first, as the first lady to play in the American Basketball Association. She played in one game for the Kentucky Colonels.
