  Gators in the Infield ?

Delta Downs was built in West Louisiana to draw bettors from what was then the dry Houston area. Delta Downs lost it's first year of operation, when heavy rains in Louisiana caused major delays in the construction of the facility. When it finally did open in 1973 it was your standard bottom level claiming track that had a purse value of 3.

In the all too familiar story the racing frog becomes a racino prince. With the legalization of Video Lottery Terminals in 2002 Delta Downs became the first racino in Louisiana. The purse value index has risen to 36 and many stakes races are run topped off by Louisiana Premier Night.

There is a rumor that three alligators live in the infield lake.

In 2011 it was business as usual with the Vinton oval running thoroughbred and Quarter Horse meets. Tracy Hebert came out on top of the jockey standings.

Through 2014, Delta Downs continues to do well, not because of horse racing. The casino side of the business is the big draw but if gaming is ever legalized in Texas, that could change in a hoofbeat.

Delta Downs is pretty much a year round racing circuit these days, alternating thoroughbred and quarter horse dates with nearby Evangeline Downs.
