  Cancelled-Expo!

Cal-Expo Racing in Sacramento begin in 1935 at the Sacramento State Fair. In 1968 a new facility named Cal-Expo replaced the old fairgrounds.

The new facility begin host the California State Fair meet in Sacramento. In 1971 year round harness racing begin at Cal-Expo under the name Golden Bear Raceway. Golden Bear Raceway eventually changed it's name to Cal-Expo.

Cal Expo In 2011 on the thoroughbred scene Inoel Beato tied Bay Area legend Russell Base with seven wins to tie for leading rider honors at the California State Fair meet. In the harness arena it seemed many of the top stables were making tracks for the east coast.

In 2012 the reason for the migration of top harness stables made sense. When the winter meet ended in June so did harness racing in California. If no group steps up to continue racing in California at Cal-Expo or some other site, standardbreds will disappear from the left coast.

Looks like someone did step up as harness racing has returned to California at the Cal-Expo Fairgrounds. When I made it there in 2012 there was no live racing but there were qualifying races going on and soon after live racing returned.
